Where industry-specific adaptation makes the biggest difference
There are three areas where the distinction between a horizontal and a vertical SaaS platform becomes most apparent.
1. Data fields and information structure
A sector such as healthcare, for example, requires highly specific records, including patient history, consent management and data retention periods. A generic customer management platform does not typically include these elements. A healthcare-specific SaaS platform already incorporates these data fields, together with the compliance rules required for the industry.
2. Business workflows
In the construction industry, a project typically progresses through stages such as estimating, permitting and execution, each involving specific documentation and approval processes. A generic project management platform treats these stages as standard tasks, whereas a construction-focused SaaS platform reflects the actual workflow and associated documentation required at every step.
3. Regulatory requirements
Industries such as financial services, insurance and credit intermediation are subject to strict legal obligations regarding how information is recorded, stored and made available. A vertical SaaS platform already embeds these requirements into its architecture, significantly reducing the risk of manual workarounds to compensate for compliance gaps.
